Louis Gerstner, the former chairman and chief executive of IBM, who is widely credited with steering the company through one of the most perilous periods in its history, died on Dec. 27 at the age of 83, the company said.

Gerstner, who led IBM from 1993 to 2002, took the helm when the technology giant was struggling with losses, internal fragmentation, and questions over whether it should be broken up.
