Costco announced a recall of Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene wine because unopened bottles may shatter even when they are not handled or in use, according to a notice the company sent to members.

The recall affects bottles sold between April 25 and Aug. 26. The private-label wine, produced in Valdobbiadene, Italy, was sold in 12 states: Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Recalled bottles have the item number 1879870 printed on the label.

“If you have an unopened bottle, do not open it. Dispose of the bottle immediately (do not return the item) by wrapping the unopened bottle in paper towels and placing it in a plastic bag before placing it in the garbage to avoid risk from shattered glass,” the notice states. “You will be entitled to a full refund of the purchase price upon returning this letter to your nearest Costco location.”

The Epoch Times reached out to Costco for comment but did not receive a response by publication time.

It is one of the latest product recalls issued by Costco.

On Sept. 4, the company issued a recall notice for Dubai Style Chocolates purchased between May 1 and Aug. 29 from the stores, citing mislabeling issues.

“The allergen statement inadvertently listed ‘gluten’ as the allergen, rather than ‘wheat.’ We assess the health risk to be minimal as gluten is listed on the allergen statement and gluten is found in wheat,” it said at the time.

On July 25, Costco warned customers about a potential safety risk posed by a small number of Pura 4 fragrance diffusers.

These items have “front covers with magnets that could detach over time. While no injuries have been reported, detached magnets—if swallowed—pose risk of injury if ingested,” the company said.

Costco offered a free replacement cover for customers who bought Pura 4 diffusers and were facing this problem.

During a quarterly earnings call back in May, Costco’s executives said the company is tackling tariff-related challenges by reworking supply chains.
“As we navigate an evolving environment with tariffs, we are working closely with our suppliers to find ways to mitigate the impact on cost, including moving production and sourcing to other countries where it makes sense to do so,” Costco CFO Gary Millerchip said during the May 29 call.

“We are leveraging our scale and global operations to help inform this approach. At Costco, we remain committed to providing quality items at the lowest possible prices and raising prices is always seen as a last resort.”

Costco, based in Washington state, currently operates 910 warehouses globally. The majority of them, 626 warehouses, are located in the United States and Puerto Rico, with 110 more in Canada and 41 in Mexico.

For the third quarter of fiscal year 2025, the company reported $62 billion in net sales, up 8 percent from the previous quarter. The company also reported a 10.4 percent year-over-year increase in membership fee income.
