Apple announced a shakeup to its top leadership Monday, with Tim Cook to become executive chairman of the company’s board of directors and John Ternus the next CEO.

In a news release, Apple said the decisions were unanimously approved of by the board, and follows a “thoughtful, long-term succession planning process.” The pair will begin their new roles on Sept. 1.
