Bulusan Volcano, or Mount Bulusan, erupted Sunday in the Philippines, spewing clouds of ash in the atmosphere and forcing thousands of locals to flee, local newspapers reported.
More than 1,000 families in the towns of Irosin and Juban in the province of Sorsogon were evacuated when Mount Bulusan exploded at around 7:22 a.m. on Sunday, spewing steam and ash more than a mile into the sky, the Manila Bulletin said, citing Philippines Office of Civil Defense Region 5 Director Raffy Alejandro.
The eruption lasted for more than nine minutes, Ed Laguerta at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology told the Manila Times.
A series of volcanic earthquakes were detected by Filipino seismologists before the eruption. More than a dozen separate quakes were confirmed during the 24 hours before the volcanic ejection, according to the Times.
The Bulusan volcano is approximately 150 miles southeast of Manila, the Philippines capital, and is the highest point in Sorsogon.
No casualties or injuries have been reported.
