Buick, a General Motors brand of luxury cars, is planning on making a luxury compact car based on the Chevrolet Cruze, according to media reports on Tuesday.

GM, which owns the Buick brand and has been trying to increase the variety of its fuel-efficient cars, will make the announcement soon, an unidentified source close to the company told the Associated Press.

The source did not disclose his or her identity because the announcement was not official.

The luxury compact, which is to be named Verano, will be manufactured at a GM factory in Orion Township, Michigan, which is north of Detroit. It is likely that new jobs would be created for the production of the Verano.

With the Verano, GM is trying to attract younger drivers to the Buick brand.

The Verano is expected to go on sale in 2012 at the earliest.
