The 12th annual charity lunch with Warren Buffett has exceeded last year’s record of $2.63 million by a mere $100, organizers said.

The lunch with billionaire investor Warren Buffett will benefit the San Francisco-based Glide Foundation. According to Denise Lamott, a Glide spokesperson, “The [anonymous] winning bidder wanted to go higher but there was no one bidding against him.”

“We are thrilled and astonished by Mr. Buffett and the winning bidder for their generosity and philanthropy, which allows Glide to continue to help those on society’s margins transform their lives,” Glide’s founder, the Rev. Cecil Williams, said in a statement.

The winning bidder has the option to bring up to seven guests to the upmarket Smith & Wollensky steak house in New York City and dine with Buffett. The steakhouse’s founder Alan Stillman has also offered $10,000 to Glide in the spirit of the event.

The opening bid started at $25,000. When the charity lunch began in 2000, this was the price of the winning bid. According to Reuters, there were nine different bidders in 2010 that battled for the highest position to have lunch with the Buffett. However this year only two different parties qualified for the bidding war with eight bids between them.

The Glide foundation assists those who are in need and in poverty. Buffett calls Glide “maybe the most effective organization I’ve seen for people down on their luck. It takes people who have hit bottom and brings them back. I’ve seen it with my own eyes.”

Last year’s anonymous bidder was an American. In 2009, Canadian investment company Salida Capital had the opportunity to lunch with the 80-year-old investment legend for $1.68 million and in 2008 an investment fund manager paid $2.11 million.

Warren Buffet is considered to be the third wealthiest person in the world, and is the chief investment officer, founder, and CEO of the Omaha, Neb.-based Berkshire Hathaway Inc.
