Police fatally shot a man holding a fake pistol on Monday in Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn. Authorities say the officers on the scene didn’t know at the time the pistol was fake.
The man, identified as 22-year-old George D'Amato, flashed his silver-colored fake pistol at police officers. Officers say they told the man to drop the weapon and he refused, after which, they shot him three times, according to an Associated Press report.
Initially, police responded to a 911 caller who said the man was walking around with a pistol in front of an elementary school.
The man died at the hospital shortly after the incident.
