NEW YORK—There’s nothing like a bowl of frittaten soup to warm the belly on a chilly Thursday night.

At Open Source Gallery in Park Slope, Brooklyn, the month of December is the time for the annual Soup Kitchen; a nightly event where a volunteer cook serves a meal to anyone and everyone.

Monika Wuhrer was this year’s first cook, serving an authentic Austrian dish, frittaten soup—a flavorful beef broth with chopped carrots. Ethnic dishes are commonplace here, with Monika reminiscing about an Australian dish while her husband, a native Texan, remembered tacos.

Dishes of crepe pieces, chopped parsley, and slices of beef, cooked medium, sat nearby.

“My mom helped me,” admitted Wuhrer, referring to Doris, who flew into town the night before with her husband Konrad for a five-night stay from a small town on the border of Switzerland.

“It’s nice to have it the whole month,” added Wuhrer. “People start to hear about it, and it becomes a more diverse crowd.”
