NEW YORK—An early Sunday morning blaze in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, left 40 injured, according to a report from the FDNY.

A total of 28 civilians were taken to a local hospital: 20 had minor injuries, four sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and another four incurred serious life-threatening injuries.

Also injured were 12 firefighters: 11 had minor injuries, while one is in critical condition, a city fire official said.

A phone call at 5:12 a.m. alerted firefighters to a fire at 510 61st Street in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Firefighters rescued people from different fire escape exists upon arriving at the scene.

The fire department called in 33 units and 138 firefighters. The fire was “pretty serious,” said a fire official from the office of public information, adding, “It doesn’t happen all the time.”

The firefighters spent nearly 2 hours and 15 minutes putting out the flames. The cause of the fire is still unknown and is being investigated.

The burned four-story, multiple-dwelling building is 25 feet wide and 70 feet deep.
