British racing driver Sean Edwards lost his life in a training accident at Australia’s Queensland Raceway Tuesday. He was 26 years old.

Edwards was sitting in the passenger seat as a driving instructor when the driver, a 20-year-old Brisbane man, lost control and slammed into the wall. Edwards was killed instantly by the impact. The driver is in intensive care.

Edwards drove Porsches successfully in a number of series including the American Le Mans Series, Rolex Sports Car Series, Porsche Super Cup and Carrera Cup series, and FIA GT3 and drove both Porsches and Mercedes in 24-hour races at the Nürburgring and Dubai.

He won the FIA GT3 European Championship in 2006, the Nürburgring 24 in 2013 and was leading the 2013 Porsche Supercup championship.

Edwards also played the role of his father, Formula One driver Guy Edwards, in Ron Howard’s racing movie Rush.

Edwards apparently recently proposed to his girlfriend, who commented on receiving a diamond ring from the driver on Twitter. His family and fiancée have not commented.
