Wild Card Playoffs - Detroit Lions v New Orleans Saints

Saints Quarterback Drew Brees signed his five-year $100 million contract Sunday ending a standoff that threatened to disrupt even further a Saints’ season that will be marred by suspensions.

“It’s been a little surreal just because of the process throughout the offseason, and just how challenging an offseason it’s been for everyone, obviously everyone within the Saints organization, this city,” Brees said, according to a report on the NFL’s website.

Brees’ deal includes $60 million in guaranteed money with a $37 million signing bonus. Overall, Brees will make $40 million in 2012 alone, while the $20 million yearly salary makes it the richest in the NFL.

The signing marks the first bright news of an offseason which has seen suspensions of players, coaches, and executives for an illegal bounty program.
