Breann Creer, a 4-year-old girl who was riding on the back of a Harley Davidson in the Southern California city of Rancho Cucamonga, died after a semi truck hit the bike, it was reported.
Creer, whose family is from Ontario, Calif., was thrown to her death in the collision, reported the San Bernardino Sun. She was pronounced dead on the scene by paramedics.
“The motorcycle was also heading east on 6th Street when it was forced to its side and was ultimately trapped underneath the tractor trailer,” police spokesman Randy Naquin said. “The motorcycle was dragged for several feet before the semi stopped.”
The driver of the motorcycle was described as as family friend with no relation to the child, who was wearing a helmet.
“I don’t know what he (motorcycle driver) was thinking putting a child that size on the back of that bike,” Jeff Swain, the co-owner of nearby BC Motorsports, told the station. “If I ever took a kid for a ride I would put them on the tank, where I have 100 percent control and always have them in my sight.”
The driver of the semi apparently did not see the motorcycle, suddenly making a U-turn in front of the motorcycle, reported NBC Los Angeles.
“I ran and checked the baby’s pulse. There was nothing,” said Cheri Slocumb, a witness, told NBC. “He kept saying, ‘I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry. Breathe, baby.’”
Speaking to ABC, Slocumb added that the semi driver likely “had no idea that he hit the motorcycle. We ran in front of the big rig. We stopped the big rig from going.”
The driver of the motorcycle sustained moderate injuries.
