Brazilian wandering spiders were found crawling over bananas by a couple in London, who were forced to spend three nights in a hotel while their home was cleaned following the discovery.
Consi Taylor saw the spiders, which appeared to be young, crawling over the bananas. At first she thought that they were mold, or bruising. But then she spotted the white nest at the bottom of the fruit.
“I screamed, it was horrible,” she told the Daily Mail. “I’m scared of spiders anyway so I had to get a friend to come round to hoover them up. Then we cleaned the floor with anti-bacterial wipes.”
The spiders are extremely venomous and their legs can grow as big as six inches.
Taylor and her husband Richard spent three nights in a hotel with their two young children while their house was fumigated and deep-cleaned.
The supermarket, Sainsbury, apologized.
“We do have rigorous controls on imported products at all stages – from harvesting to transportation – which is why this is so rare,” the company said in a statement.
Taylor says that despite the cleaning she’s still terrified that one is still alive in their house.
