SALVADOR, BRAZIL-During the 10th anniversary of the The World Social Forum (WSF) in Grande Porto Alegre, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, marked his participation in the Forum with a speech in the Gigantinho Gym in Porto Alegre on Jan. 26 in which he said he will go to Haiti on Feb. 25, leading Brazilian physicians. The president proposed that the World Social Forum establish solidarity with Haiti as a goal.

“We taught the world how a peacekeeping force can be, without interference in the policy or practice of violence against the people of that country. May this earthquake shake the shame of human beings who rule this planet, so that we can do in Haiti now, what we should have done ten years ago ... We want to take Brazilian physicians to provide solidarity, so that we can give this country the opportunity to become a sovereign country and have a functioning democracy, he said.

The WSF stressed that there must be another political culture that goes beyond power struggle and also emphasized the need to think about development beyond the economic issue, citing as an example the global economic crisis of 2008 and 2009.

Thirty-five thousand people gathered for 915 activities in state of Rio Grande do Sul. Held between Jan. 25 and 29, the Forum also brought people together in seven cities in southern Brazil. Besides a general evaluation of the 10th anniversary of the Forum, issues of great importance on the world stage, as well as topics particular to Brazil were discussed.

The event, which is opposed to imperialism, neo-liberalism, and any form of world domination by capital received a positive evaluation, not only because of the activities and the great number of people in attendance, but especially due to the various themes, dealing with education, environment, culture, economy, democracy, human rights, among others.

One of the organizers of the Intercontinental Youth Camp, Eduardo Nunes, said that the event is not just a discussion but that the topics discussed will be put into practice in different parts of the world. “We want to show that with our diversity, we propose and practice a new idea of world ... we have to think about the importance of sustainability, biodiversity, making efforts not only by discussing environmental education, but making it a reality.”

Mr. Nunes also emphasized the participation of young people, “Now that we are living in an imperialist globalization, the Intercontinental Youth Camp is bringing together different groups from different countries to discuss a new attitude, a new idea of the world,” he said. Groups of young people, made up 27 percent of the participants, in the World Social Forum.

The World Social Forum of 2010 was a decentralized organization and event, and will occur around the world in the form of regional forums and themes throughout the year. The organizers of the forum in Porto Alegre believe that some of the issues arising in Porto Alegre will certainly contribute to the discussions in other places.
