RIO DE JANEIRO—The crisis Cabinet of Brazil met Tuesday with representatives from the state governments of Pernambuco and Alagoas to assess the damage caused by severe rains and floods that have left over 72,000 people homeless.

During the meeting, the state authorized the release of $100 million to assist the two states. Half that amount has already been delivered for immediate relief, such as food, water, medicine, and army services to assist with distribution and general safety. The rest of the funds will be sent once a damage report is received.

Defense Minister Nelson Jobim says the state will assess with the logistics of delivering aid to the affected families.

“A field hospital has been set up. Now let’s do a survey of logistics to reduce the effects of the damage,” the minister told local media.

Brazil’s civil defense has also put out a call for volunteer health professionals.

“Health professionals who want to volunteer to help us with our teams can travel to these cities,” Executive Secretary of Defense Denilson Queiroz told media.

According to Brazil’s civil defense website, as of Tuesday there are 26,141 unsheltered, 47,687 homeless, 607 missing, and 29 dead in Alagoas State. In Pernambuco, there are 17,809 unsheltered, 24,552 homeless and 13 deaths.

The national civil defense has earmarked 23,000 provision baskets to Alagoas and 12,000 to Pernambuco along with thousands of shelter kits that include tarpaulins to make temporary shelters.
