A former basketball player is facing first-degree murder charges, accused of murdering his girlfriend who went missing in 2013, just hours after learning she was pregnant, according to reports.
Kelsie Schelling, 21, of Denver, was last seen on Feb. 4, 2013, after she told family members that she was going to drive to Pueblo, Colorado, to tell her boyfriend, Donthe Lucas, about the news. Police said that she made it to Pueblo, and her vehicle was found in the city about 10 days after she went missing.
According to a police statement, “Lucas was already in custody at the Pueblo County Detention Center facing unrelated charges” when he was served with an arrest warrant.
According to the report, Schelling traveled to Pueblo at Lucas’s request after she sent a picture of her ultrasound. Then he told her he had a surprise for her and said, “Just wait and see for yourself you probably wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”
“I think there is hope that we will find the body in the coming days, weeks or months,” said Dan Corsentino, who is a former Pueblo County Sheriff whom Kelsie’s family hired as a private investigator.
“It was difficult for law enforcement to penetrate the shroud of secrecy that existed within the Donthe Lucas family... I think it’s highly possible a family member or someone close to Donthe could have turned.”
Police didn’t start calling her disappearance a homicide investigation until this month, he noted.
“I have no doubt that Donthe – her boyfriend, the father of her child – is responsible for her disappearance,” Schelling’s mother, Laura Saxton, told the Denver Channel earlier in 2017. “I can’t sleep at night. I hope he can’t either.”
According to Saxton, “We know that Kelsie made it to Pueblo and did meet up with Donthe. No one has seen or heard from her since.”
