A Royal Caribbean cruise ship was forced to head back to shore after an accident in one of its swimming pools.

An 8-year-old boy on board the Anthem of the Seas cruise ship had to be treated by the ship’s medical staff after being found unconscious in one of the swimming pools at around 8 p.m. on Thursday.

The incident occurred 5 to 10 miles off Breezy Point, Queens. The ship had left Bayonne, N.J., earlier in the evening.

“We are assisting family of 8 year old boy sailing on #AnthemoftheSeas who had an accident in one of the ship pool,” Royal Caribbean representatives said in a tweet on Thursday. “Boy needed medical attention, so #AnthemoftheSeas sailed back to Bayonne [New Jersey]. He is currently being treated at the hospital.”

“Our Care Team is providing support to his family. Please join us in keeping them in our thoughts & prayers,” the company said in another tweet.

Afterwards, the ship altered course and headed back towards New Jersey. The boy was evacuated by helicopter to a Staten Island hospital, where Royal Caribbean staff is providing support to the boy’s family, according to a blog post.

Passenger Mike Ritchie posted a photo showing the New York Police Department’s medical team heading to the ship.

Officials told CBS2 that the child had gone without oxygen for 18 minutes.

As of Friday, Royal Caribbean has not provided an update on the boy’s condition.
