BOSTON—John McHugh, carrying a “Don’t Tread on Me” flag, was one of many participating in rallies across the nation on Nov. 14, 2020, calling for free and fair elections.
Thousands of people participated in grassroots rallies in state capitals across the country on Nov. 7, 2020, and again a week later on Nov. 14 across the country with more traveling to Washington to demonstrate.
The organizers of the Stop the Steal March on Washington, which includes advocates from various groups, are counting over 52 rallies, many of which occurred independently of their organizing. They have since called on the public to rally every Saturday until the Electoral College makes the call on Dec. 14.
“America is going through a subversive takeover of our country that most of the people do not want to happen. And what should we do about it? This is what we can do about it,” McHugh said.
On election night, McHugh couldn’t stay up to watch the count, as he had work the next day. He woke up the next day expecting to see projections of results. Instead, there were conflicting reports about election fraud, projections, and allegations of stolen votes and dumped ballots. As he tried to keep up with the news and find information over the next week, he said he found bias and censorship.
“The social media censorship is like straight out of communist Russia; that’s my generation, we dealt with communist Russia and it appears to me that seems to be just a tool that can be used to control the people,” McHugh said. He added that he couldn’t trust mass media anymore.
McHugh supports President Donald Trump, and believes he will fight for fair elections as well.
“We have a warrior in Donald Trump who is fighting for us, and we support him,” McHugh said.
