The Boston Red Sox traded veteran third-baseman Kevin Youkilis, and cash, to the Chicago White Sox Sunday for infielder Brent Lillibridge and minor league pitcher Zach Stewart, according to a report on the team’s website.

Youkilis, 33, has been a very good hitter and corner infielder throughout his career, but has been limited by injuries the last couple of seasons. He became expendable following the exceptional play of the younger Will Middlebrooks. Middlebrooks, 23, came up in early May following an injury to Youkilis and is still with the team, sporting a .326 batting average, 9 home runs, and 34 RBIs.

The trade fills a need for the first-place White Sox, who are with the injured Brent Morel.

“In terms of wanting and needing a little bit more stability at the position, as well as providing a little bit of offense in the form that Kevin can provide it,” said White Sox general manager Kenny Williams.
