[xtypo_dropcap]C[/xtypo_dropcap]anada and the United States are negotiating a deal on border security, according to a draft declaration leaked to the press that is supposed to be announced in January. Leaked documents suggest Canada would accede to U.S. demands on border security, information sharing, and immigration controls in exchange for the U.S. easing controls on the Canada-U.S. border where Canadian businesses say red tape and security measures are hurting trade.
Opposition MPs criticized the government for the apparent secrecy of the deal and have called for an open debate. Prime Minister Stephen Harper did not deny the possibility of a deal but said no deal exists yet and that he is working hard on behalf of Canadians and looking for ways to enhance security and the national economy
