U. S. Embassy staff members were attacked near a restaurant in Hadda, a commercial district in Yemen’s capital Sana'a, when a bomb was thrown at their vehicle, a spokesman said on Thursday.
U.S. State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said at a press briefing that the blast had occurred outside the car, adding that officials were investigating the accident.
“There were people in the vehicle. The bomb went off outside the vehicle. … There were no injuries,” he said.
On Wednesday, the U.S. Embassy in Yemen issued a travel warning cautioning foreign residents that they were targeted for attacks.
It is not clear whether the attack came from al-Qaeda militants in the Arabian Peninsula or other rebel groups in the country.
Yemeni officials said that they had arrested a few suspects, but did not give further explanations, according to an AP report.
In the past, Al-Qaeda’s branch claimed credit for attacks on the U.S. Embassy and other diplomatic missions in Yemen. The White House has increased its counterterrorism support to the Yemen government, since several attempted terrorist attacks last Christmas, and recent mail bombs meant for the United States.
