The body of a newborn baby—no more than two weeks old—was found floating off the Florida coast on Friday, June 1, reported AP.

Detectives are piecing together information as to how the baby girl died and how long she had been in the water.

Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Captain Steven Stravelli said that the time the baby spent in the water, and whether it was alive when it entered the water, is unknown.

The baby appeared to be of a healthy weight but Stravelli declined to say whether there were signs of abuse. He said it’s also unclear whether the baby was placed into the water from a boat, by someone wading into the water, or perhaps tossed from shore or a nearby bridge.

Stravelli said it is possible that the baby was on board a boat bringing illegal immigrants from Cuba, Haita or elsewhere, according to AP.

The two-week-old baby was likely Hispanic or multiracial, but could have been Caucasian with dark skin, Stravelli said.

“We have actually tried our best to identify the nationality of the child, but we cannot rule out anyone,” Stravelli said.

The toddler’s body was discovered on Friday by Chris Lemieux, a firefighter from Boynton Beach, as he was out fishing off a boat with his friends. Initially, Lemieux thought the toddler was a doll, but as he motored over, he quickly realized it was baby, reported ABC 11.

Results from an autopsy are pending.
