Seventeen bodies have been recovered from last week’s deadly Air France crash, authorities announced over the weekend.

On Sunday morning, Brazilian Air Force spokesman Jorge Amaral told reporters that the bodies along with debris had been retrieved and was positively identified as belonging to flight 447. The plane is thought to have gone down about 600 miles north of the Brazilian coast.

A piece of luggage containing an airline ticket for the ill-fated flight was found near the bodies, which have been taken to Brazil to be examined for any clues as to why the flight went down.

The Paris-bound flight left Rio de Janeiro with 228 passengers and crew, and suddenly lost contact with air traffic controllers as it encountered a thunderstorm over the Atlantic Ocean. There was no contact with the pilot of the plane, but the plane sent out an incredible 24 automated error messages over a period of four minutes before disappearing into the ocean.

The search for the flight data and cockpit voice recorders continues. Search crews are listening for a beacon that is attached to the flight data recorders. The beacon is supposed to emit sound for about a month before running out of power.

Teams looking for the black boxes may need every minute as they try to locate the remains of the flight in as much as 20,000 feet of water.
