Bob Costas ripped the Mets Sunday after New York posted a 4-3 comeback victory over the Chicago Cubs.
Following the game, Costas spoke of the celebration during NBC’s coverage of the U.S. Open.
“And the team 14 games under .500 celebrates as if it just won the seventh game of the World Series. Another indication of the ongoing decline of western civilization,” said Costas while NBC showed the highlights of the game.
The Mets avoided being swept by the Cubs, winning their last game.
David Aardsma, a Mets pitcher, responded to Costas’s comments on Twitter.
“I love Bob Costas but are we supposed to roll over and die on the season? Or should we celebrate the excitement of a huge comeback?” he tweeted.
And strength coach Jim Malone tweeted: “I respect Bob Costas as a broadcaster, but his comments today are a classic example of a non athlete not ‘getting it.’”
