NEW YORK—The Board of Regents of the New York State Department of Education elected Dr. John King Jr. as New York State Education commissioner and president of the University of the State of New York (USNY) on May 16.

Dr. King joined the state Education Department in 2009 as senior deputy commissioner for P-12 education.

“In that role he has won deep respect from teachers, school leaders, superintendents, and policymakers for his results-oriented leadership and a style that has consistently brought together diverse groups ... to achieve consensus around critical reforms,” said Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch.

King will succeed David Steiner, who announced in April his plan to return to his position as dean of the Hunter College School of Education.

“John was my partner in every reform we have pursued over the past two years,” Steiner said. “He will be an excellent commissioner who will make a tremendous difference in the lives of New York’s 3.1 million school children.”

He will serve as the senior deputy commissioner for P-12 education at the New York State Education Department, where he has led the Race to the Top initiative for the past two years.

“John has demonstrated remarkable energy and insight that the board wants in place to implement the Regents reform agenda,” Regent Anthony Bottar said.

King has requested a 15 percent salary reduction, from the current $250,000 to $212,500 because of the fiscal crisis, and will assume his post as the state’s 14th education commissioner on June 15.
