The Toronto Blue Jays (66–79) pummeled the New York Yankees (93–53) 10–4 Tuesday night in the first of their two-game series at Yankee Stadium. The AL East leading Yankees now lead the regular season 11–6 against the fourth place Blue Jays.

The Yankees loss comes on the heels of lefty Andy Pettite being dropped from the pitching rotation with a sore shoulder. It is possible he’ll recover for Monday night’s game on the rouad against the AL West leading L.A. Angels (86–58). The Angels have a 44–27 home record to the Yankees’ 42–30 road record.

After a scoreless first inning the Yankees drew first blood in the bottom of the second when center fielder Brett Gardner singled to right center sending Jorge Posada home and Nick Swisher to third. Derek Jeter then powered a single to left center to send Swisher in for the second run of the inning.

The Blue Jays wasted no time in answering the Yankees with left fielder Travis Snider blasting a two-run home run to deep right field. Designated hitter Adam Lind then followed the first homer of the night with his own to right field to give the Jays the a 3–2 lead.

The Jays continued their power surge in the fourth with two homers, from third baseman Edwin Encarnacion and Snider, to pull away 5–2.

The Jays dominated the game for the next four innings scoring two more runs in the sixth, one in the seventh, and one in the eighth.

The Yankees offense remained scoreless until the eighth inning when Gardner hit a double to right field to send in Posada and put second baseman Robinson Cano on third.

Both teams’ benches emptied shortly afterwards when Posada and Blue Jays relief pitcher Jesse Carlson got into a fight after Posada brushed against him when coming into home plate. The two wrestled to the ground and a brawl erupted.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi got caught up in the action and emerged with a bruise and cut on his head. Posada was ejected by empire Jim Joyce.

The Jays closed out the top of the ninth with another homer—their fifth of the night—from Bautista, his fifth of the season.

The Yankees answered with Hideki Matsui singling to center to send Mark Teixeira home. Jays relief pitcher Brandon League had a difficult time closing out the inning.

Snider was the offensive player of the night with two hits, three RBIs, and two home runs.
