An African-American supporter of President Donald Trump got punched in the face multiple times after trying to leave the president’s rally in Phoenix, Arizona on Tuesday night, Aug. 22.
Reports say that things were mostly peaceful until the end of the rally when Trump supporters started leaving the Phoenix Convention Center. Police had to use tear gas to manage the thick crowds of supporters and protesters.
One violent clash, recorded on video by New York Times correspondent Simon Romero, shows the moment where a pickup truck filled with Trump supporters donning Make America Great Again hats gets surrounded by protesters.
The video footage shows one of the Trump supporters—an African-American man—restraining his friend, who is arguing loudly with the protesters. The friend later gets into the driver’s seat of the truck, and the black man climbs into the back of the open truck with two other colleagues.
As the driver attempts to move the truck slowly away from the group of people, a protester charges at the black man and punches him multiple times in the face.
The man has no chance to react as the truck picks up speed and drives away.
The video posted on the correspondent’s Twitter account is titled “Ugly scene in downtown Phoenix. Watch til the end.”
About 15,000 people turned up to the Phoenix rally, according to Trump’s Twitter.
Trump’s rally comes one week after protests in Charlottesville turned violent when members from of the alt-right and alt-left clashed over the removal of Confederate statues.
In another tweet, Trump defended his comments on Charlottesville and said that mainstream media had put him in a bad light.
“Last night in Phoenix I read the things from my statements on Charlottesville that the Fake News Media didn’t cover fairly. People got it!” he tweeted on Aug. 23.
A recent poll revealed that nearly half of Americans believe that both groups of protesters were to blame for the violence in Charlottesville.
The SurveyMonkey poll found that 40 percent of American adults believe that both groups of protesters were most responsible for the violence in Charlottesville after surveying 2,181 American respondents.
