Black Jesus is set to premiere on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim this week. The show marks the return of Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder.

Gerald “Slink” Johnson stars as Black Jesus, with the other cast members including Charlie Murphy (The Chapelle Show), Corey Holcomb (The Cleveland Show) and John Witherspoon (The Boondocks).

Kali Hawk (Bridesmaids), Andra Fuller (L.A. Complex), Antwon Tanner (One Tree Hill), Andrew Bachelor (House of Lies), Angela Gibbs (The Fosters), and Valenzia Algarin (True Blood) round out the cast.

“The series finds Jesus living in present day Compton, CA on a daily mission to spread love and kindness throughout the neighborhood with the help of his small but loyal group of downtrodden followers,” according to Adult Swim.

The show is slated to premiere on Thursday, August 7 at 11 p.m. EDT. Episodes are 30 minutes long.

Murphy, probably best known for his role on Chappelle’s Show, is featured in the expanded trailer. “He ain’t Jesus Christ, he’s just a crazy dude who thinks he’s Jesus Christ,” Murphy says at one point.

“He’s a cult leader,” he says later.

The glimpses of the show’s content in the trailer and expanded trailer are already prompting calls for the show to be taken off the air, even before any episodes have been broadcast.

Part of that may be the behavior of Black Jesus, which includes cursing and growing marijuana.
