Chicago Bears v Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills released three-time Pro Bowl linebacker Shawne Merriman Monday, according to a report on the team’s website.

Merriman, who was one of the NFL’s premier pass-rushers from 2005 through 2007, totaling 39.5 sacks during that three-year period, has seen his production drop significantly in recent years as injuries have limited his abilities.

Buffalo picked up Merriman off waivers from San Diego in the middle of the 2010 season. Less than an hour into his first practice with the Bills, Merriman was injured and placed on injured reserve.

The Bills then signed him to a two-year, $10.5 million deal with $3 million of his 2012 salary guaranteed. But after missing 11 of 16 games last season with an Achilles’ injury, while totaling just one sack when he did play, Merriman had dropped down the depth chart this offseason.
