Black and white pack a particular punch midsummer. Bill Cunningham sees it all and tells us his New York fashion story.

What caught my eye recently were large black circles on white skirts or in the evening on strapless dresses. Or there was a young man came down the avenue on his way to work, all in black and white. He just looked great. And then the sense of humor: when he passed by, the back [of the black jacket] was missing! It was in the design, two sides of jacket were tight together. Young people love experiments in fashion design.

It’s kind of refreshing  as we get to the middle of summer to see kind of old Chestnut black & white come back with a force. I suppose because it’s so easy for people to put together. It’s almost effortless. But it really isn’t, it takes a lot of thought to get the proportions and the balance correct. For this time of year I thought it was a terrific look.
