FULLERTON, Calif.—A 67-year-old man was killed by a hit-and-run driver Thursday.

Police were dispatched at 5:07 a.m. to Chapman Avenue and Ladera Vista Drive when the bicyclist, whose name was not immediately released, was struck by a vehicle.

The bicyclist was found in a brick planter on the north side of the street and the driver who hit him fled, according to police Capt. Jon Radus.

The victim was rushed to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

A short time after they were dispatched, officers received a call from a witness who followed a green 1999 Ford F-250 westbound on Chapman near Berkeley Avenue that was missing a tire and still moving on a rim, Radus said. The witness followed the driver to Delphine Place and Jacaranda Place, where the pickup’s driver got out and ran away, Radus said.

The pickup’s driver was described as a Latino man about 5 feet, 8 inches with a stocky build, dressed in black clothes, Radus said.

Police believe the bicyclist could have been struck by a Ford F-250, Radus said. The hit-and-run vehicle rammed into the bicyclist from behind, sending the bicyclist into the brick planter, Radus said.

The vehicle kept going and left parts behind as it rumbled over the sidewalk, Radus said. Police were working to see if the pickup with a missing wheel was involved in the hit-and-run, Radus added.
