Firefighters battled a fire at the 25-story Barrington Plaza apartments off Wilshire Boulevard on Friday in Los Angeles, California.
Video of the scene showed that the fire was pretty much out as of 12:46 p.m. PDT. The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed that it was put out about 10 minutes later. It took “just 71 minutes to fully extinguish the blaze,” said Brian Humphrey of the fire department.
The building is on the corner of Wilshire and Stoner Avenue, 11740 Wilshire Blvd.
More than 200 firefighters responded.
5 people were hospitalized from the fire, including one child, who is in critical condition. The conditions and ages of the other four are unclear as of yet. Three firefighters were taken to the Grossman Burn Center with non-life threatening burns (two have leg burns, the other has an ear burn).
The fire was confined to one 2-bedroom unit. There aren’t any sprinklers in the entire building.
“Some residents in floors (well) above fire reportedly failed to heed alarms and leave during fire,” said Humphrey of the fire department in an alert.
Two investigators are examining the unit to determine the fire’s origin and cause. It’s unclear where the unit’s occupant was when the fire broke out, Humphrey said. Wilshire Boulevard was closed from San Vicente Blvd to Bundy Drive.
