The Golden Globe Awards are always a big day not just the art of acting, but also for fashion. It is a perfect occasion to see rare pieces from haute couture collections, which usually stay only on the runway. On Sunday, at the 71st awards ceremony, many wore slim dresses that emphasize the female figure, and the common colors were black, white, purple, and nude.
Cate Blanchett in Armani Couture
Cate Blanchett won the best actress award (for her role in Woody Allen’s “Blue Jasmine”, but in my mind, she also won for the most beautiful, sophisticated, and glamorous look on the red carpet. Her black lace Armani Prive couture dress made a perfect contrast with her blond hair and blue eyes. Her diamond Chopard earrings were the finishing touch on her whole look of indescribable beauty. I believe it is Blanchett who made the dress look graceful rather than the other way around. There is just something about her.
Michelle Dockery in Oscar De La Renta
Michelle Dockery always radiates a sort of elegant vintage beauty, perhaps borrowed from the historic TV series “Downton Abbey,” in which she plays Lady Mary Crawley. I love the delicate embroidered flowers on this Oscar de la Renta dress, as well as the simplicity of Dockery’s Bulgari accessories, and the whole beauty of Dockery’s personality that shines through.
Jessica Chastain in Givenchy
Jessica Chastain’s simple, yet ingenious, black dress with a black wing pattern suit this ginger-haired beauty well. Of course, it is not just any black dress, but rather a Givenchy black dress we’re talking about. Her sparkling Bulgari necklace emphasized Chastain’s natural beauty.
Lupita Nyong'o in Ralph Lauren
The fresh spring color of her dress complimented young Nyong’o’s dark complexion; the contrast was striking. Moreover, the dress is not just wonderfully elegant, but also fun to wear! It’s like she has a Superman cape she could play in if the ceremony becomes too dull. Nyong’o has a great advantage as far as red carpet fashion goes with this dual-natured (elegant and fun) dress.
Julianna Margulies in Andrew Gn
This timeless combination of black and gold will probably never disappear from high fashion, and neither will it lose its elegance. This Andrew Gn dress reminded me of Dolce&Gabana’s fall/winter 2012 collection . Moreover, Julianna Margulies’s sky-blue eyes shine just like D&G’s favorite model Bianca Balti.

For some people, this may be too vintage, but that is exactly what I love about it. Purple and red work surprisingly well together to make Carolina Herrera’s dress stand out among the others—and to make the dress stand from the red carpet as well.

Nominated for her performance in the TV series “Orphan Black,” Tatiana Maslany chose a nude dress with lots of sparkling details, a definite attention-grabber. Sparkling vertical stripes create the feeling of a diamond rain, giving the simple, straight cut a dazzling appeal. The dangly earrings add to the effect. The dress was designed by Jenny Packham of Britain, known for her work on bridal gowns. Lucky brides!

The stunning cut of this black Lanvin dress created a wonderful mermaid-like silhouette on actress Emma Roberts. The ocean-blue stones of her Jennifer Meyer earrings compliment the look.
Amber Heard in Versace
The deep blue and interesting cut of Amber Heard’s dress reminds me of the ocean waves before a storm—wonderful and magnificent, but at the same time very strong and striking. This description also fits Heard’s bold attitude.
Taylor Schilling in Thakoon
I was unsure at first about including Taylor Schilling of the TV series “Orange is the New Black” on this list. I was finally convinced by the cut of her dress and harmony of all the details of her look. The gentle drapery in front; the fresh, vivid color; and the sparkling Swarovski earrings were all perfectly matched. The burgundy nail color was like the shining ruby in a crown, completing the look. The natural, loose hairdo also beautifully suited the loose cut of the dress.
