Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) says he opposes an effort by top Democrats to reinstate the tax deduction on state and local taxes (SALT), which has been called “a tax break for rich people in blue states.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) are among the Democrats who want to fully reimplement the SALT deduction. The Republicans’ tax reform bill in 2017, signed by then-President Donald Trump, put a limit on the amount that can be deducted on federal tax returns.
