OTTAWA—A barbecue competition to be held Father’s Day weekend in Orleans promises to be both delicious and informative.

The first annual Rib Feast organized by Romantic Fireplaces and BBQs will see barbecue lovers compete in two days of cook-offs on June 16 and 17.

Amateur teams will participate in a cook-off showdown of recipes of their own choosing on Saturday. Sunday’s event will be a two-meat BBQ competition featuring chicken and ribs.

The event will also offer barbecue ribs for sale and provide attendees with information and demonstrations of barbecue cooking, grilling, and smoking.

For each half rack of ribs sold over the weekend, organizers will donate $1 to the School Breakfast Program set up by the Ottawa Network for Education.

“[The Rib Feast] is going to educate people on what real barbecue and quality barbecue is all about,” said Mike Pilon, owner of the local business that specializes in custom fireplaces, barbecues, and outdoor kitchens.

“Food is expensive. That’s where we spend most of our money,” Pilon said. “If your food is not going to be burned or is going to taste better, that’s what barbecue is all about.”

A demonstration of premium grills that feature advanced infrared technology and energy efficiency is expected to gather a lot of attention.
