FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.—Mrs. Leipertz, a retired banker, said Shen Yun made her feel wonderful: “I enjoyed it so much.” Mr. Leipertz, a retired physicist and teacher, accompanied her to see the performance at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.
“Beautiful colors!” Mr. Leipertz exclaimed. I’ve never see anything with so many bright colors. And the dancing was magnificent!”
Mrs. Leipertz agreed, “It’s gorgeous.”
She said she was sorry that New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts cannot be enjoyed in China. “That’s very tragic,” she said, referring to the restrictions on artistic expression in China that Mr. Leipertz mentioned.
“The explanation dates back to the Cultural Revolution and systematic attempts to wipe out the heritage of 5,000 years of civilization. Shen Yun’s mission is to revive traditional Chinese culture,” the Shen Yun website states.
The couple’s daughter-in-law is from Beijing, and they have two American-Chinese grandchildren, one a dancer.
“I’m very proud—that’s why I came,” Mrs. Leipertz said. She said she told her husband that she would like to treat the grandchildren to Shen Yun if it performs in their city. “It would be shameful if they didn’t see it,” she said.
Mrs. Leipertz said she was so moved by one dance that she cried.
Speaking of the digital backdrops, Mr. Leipertz said, “I’ve never seen anything like that—the combination of the stage into the screen.”
Many theatergoers comment on the colorful animated projections. They are “so remarkably true-to-life, they allow you to forget where you are and journey to another place and time,” the website states.
