Ball State University (BSU) in Muncie, Indiana, issued an emergency alert after there were reports of a gunman on campus. It urged students to shelter-in-place amid  preliminary reports that there was a hostage situation.

“Possible armed assailant in the area of Rec and Wellness. Avoid HP, Lewellen, Rec Center, HP, and Worthen Arena. This is all we have at this time. Updates will be emailed to this address,” a statement from the university reads on its website.

The university via Twitter that someone “shouted there was a gun,” adding that university police are investigating. It added that “media reports of a hostage situation are inaccurate.”

The original statement was posted after 4:30 p.m.

It said on Twitter: “linking to its website. “If you are in one of these buildings (HP, Lewellen, Rec Center, Arena), secure yourself in a safe location & remain until released by UPD,” it added.

 On Twitter, some students commented that they don’t feel safe on campus.

“Only at Ball State is there an alleged gunman in a building and we are all outside just chillin and laughing,” wrote one.

Another added: “Why is something always happening at Ball State.”
