The travel chaos continues in the United Kingdom after chilling temperatures last night led to police warnings to stay off the roads and main airports announcing limited flights.
Temperatures dropped to almost -20 degrees Celsius in parts of England, with severe weather warnings for Wales and southern England. The Met Office is forecasting widespread icy roads across the nation, and heavy snowfall in Scotland, southern England and Wales.
“Snow, combined with widespread ice and freezing temperatures will lead to the risk of significant disruption through Monday,” Met Office Chief Forecaster Steve Willington said yesterday.
Following the weather warnings, British Airways cancelled more than half of approximately 130 departures and also arrivals at Heathrow, according to the Daily Telegraph, even though there was no fresh snow in London overnight.
Many passengers had already spent the weekend at Heathrow due to previous flight cancellations and there is mounting anger towards British Airways over wrecked Christmas travel plans.
Eurostar was forced to cancel rail services due to bad weather in France, stranding more than 1,000 passengers in Paris, including many Britons.
One company is increasing services, however. Royal Mail has promised up to 14,000 extra delivery rounds to two million homes during the next four evenings to clear the huge Christmas postbag, the Guardian reported, although the pledge is weather permitting.
