Cynthia Wachenheim, a Manhattan lawyer, jumped from the window of her 8th-floor apartment with her 10-month-old child in her arms on March 13, in New York City.  Wachenheim died on impact, but the baby, who was in a harness, survived the fall, the New York Daily News reported.

Witness Steven Dominguez, 18, saw Wachenheim hit the ground.  “It sounded like a big piece of wood hitting the floor. When I got closer, I saw the baby crying,” he told the Daily News.

Wachenheim left a 13-page letter in her apartment where she went on for pages about what a terrible mother she was.  According to a source who spoke with the Daily News, she may have been suffering from postpartum depression.

The baby was released from the hospital with minor injuries, and will likely be returned to the custody of his father, Wachenheim’s husband, Hal Bacharach.
