Having a baby is one of the most exciting things that will ever happen to you. A large part of the excitement leading up to the event lies in planning and preparing for the big arrival; purchasing tiny new-born outfits, buggies, car seats and a whole array of other baby-related items.

The downside of all this eager anticipation and planning is, of course, the expenditure. If you purchase all the items new from the stores, you’re looking at a cost that runs into the hundreds, if not thousands.

Of course, from time to time, it is fun to buy something brand new from the store, and indeed, in certain cases, it’s actively advisable. However, there are plenty of fabulous second hand bargains out there just waiting to be discovered, leaving you with extra money in the bank to spend on other things.

Creating the Perfect Nursery for your Baby…Second-Hand Style!

If you’ve looked at the prices of cradles, bassinets and cribs in the high street stores, it’s likely that your jaw may have dropped, just ever so slightly. They may be beautiful, but one thing is for sure, they certainly aren’t cheap!

When it comes to baby furniture, it makes much more sense to buy second hand. Here’s just a few reasons why:

  • Quality. More often than not, there is hardly any difference between a second hand crib and a brand new one. Except, of course, the price! Most cribs, cradles, dressers and bassinets are made from wood, which is naturally a very long lasting material anyway. At the worst, there may be a few surface scratches, but it’s likely that you'll be able to find almost perfect quality furniture for babies in second hand stores.

  • Price. There’s no doubt about it, you'll absolutely save a fortune if you kit your nursery out with second hand furniture. If you choose to invest in second hand changing tables, dressers, cribs and cradles, you’re likely to save hundreds of dollars.

  • Creativity. Buying second hand also allows you to get a bit more creative. If your second hand changing table has a few superficial marks, whip out the paint brush and completely transform its appearance with a lick of brightly colored paint. This is the real advantage of second hand furniture, it gives you real license to unleash your inner interior designer!

  • Originality. By buying second hand, you‘ll also avoid the problem of creating a room that looks exactly like every other nursery on the block. You’ll be able to mix and match materials to create a look that is far more original than simply buying from the one store

  • Designer. If you’ve got a yearning to buy designer, but not the accompanying salary to accommodate it, then second hand is the only way forward. You can often find designer baby furniture at vastly reduced prices in second hand stores.

Second Hand Baby Furniture – Where Can You Find It?

There are all sorts of places you can track down second hand baby furniture at competitive prices. A consignment store is perhaps the most reliable way of purchasing, or alternatively, look on online auction sites or at the private ads in the local newspaper.
