A baby born through an emergency C-section after the mother died on her way to the hospital has also died, police said on Thursday.

Desiree Strout, 27, was rushing to the hospital for an induced birth, nine months pregnant, when her car slid on black ice, hurtled into a snowbank, and slid sideways across an icy lake.

Strout was killed, but her body was rushed to the hospital in Skowhegan, Maine, after her death so that doctors could try to save her child.

Now the infant, named Gage, has died after being in critical condition since his birth, reported WABI on Thursday morning.

Strout’s husband, who was also in the vehicle, and her 8-year-old daughter, are expected to survive after sustaining injuries in the crash.

Strout’s uncle had told a local media outlet that he felt for her children after the death.

“Now the little man’s empty-handed, you can find a dad figure any place, but moms are golden, you ain’t gonna find that every place, you can’t,” he said. “You can’t replace a mom, not in my book.”
