Aurora, Colorado is being hit with “heavy rain” on Sunday.
The Aurora Police Department said via Facebook at 12:40 p.m. MDT that police are monitoring the situation.
“Aurora is experiencing heavy rain at this time,” the department said. “Police are monitoring Utah Park, Expo Park and Kelly Dam as well as the intersections we expect to flood. Road closures will be updated as they occur.”
In a Sunday morning update, the National Weather Service said that a flood threat still continues for a range of cities across the state, including Aurora.
“Heavy rain will continue this afternoon in and near the foothills with a few thunderstorms possible this afternoon,” according to the service. “Due to recent heavy rainfall…Total rainfall amounts have been increased to 1 to 4 inches could occur in some locations by Sunday evening with the highest amounts in the foothills and adjacent plains. Rainfall rates of one inch in 30 minutes or less will be possible in the heaviest rain.”
A flash flood watch remains in effect through Sunday evening at 6 p.m.
The major road problem is South Parker Road between East Jewell Avenue and East Florida Avenue, with new potholes opening up, a Colorado Department of Transportation spokeswoman told the Aurora Sentinel.
As of 11 a.m. Sunday, many of the power outages were restored and all streets were re-opened except for Peoria Street between East Mexico and East Florida avenues and the intersection of Alameda & Havana.
