Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of Burma’s opposition party, made her debut in Burma’s Parliament on Monday, two months after she was sworn in.
“It is good that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is now attending Parliament. We very much welcome her,” a parliament military appointee Brig-Gen Wai Lin told The Irrawaddy news magazine. He would not comment on whether the military lawmakers will support bills proposed by Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD).
“I will try my best for the country,” Suu Kyi was quoted as saying by AFP on her first day in public office. She was joined by 41 other members of the NLD, who were elected into office on April 1.
Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, returned to Burma recently after spending 17 days in Europe. She received the prize during the trip—21 years after it was awarded to her.
Burma has embarked on a series of reforms since its government transferred from a military junta to civilian leaders, including releasing scores of political prisoners and allowing opposition parties to run for office.
However, there have been challenges. Authorities arrested on Friday a number of student leaders just before the anniversary of the suppression of a student movement 50 years ago. They were released on Saturday.
