The ASUU strike 2013 continues, and the latest update is that the reported re-opening of Enugu State University without the union’s consent didn’t happen.
The Enugu State University of Science and Technology was slated to re-open at the beginning of this week, the university’s registrar told students. The union disavowed the move.
But the university didn’t re-open, and now four professors at the university are being queried for what the union is terming a potential sabotage to the ongoing strike.
Agu Gab Agu, chairman of the union branch at the university, told lecturers in a meeting that the four professors met with school management that told the management that the strike had been called off.
“We are in meeting with the management and we have refuted that because we do not know them. We did not give them the mandate and everybody seems to be concerned about such a development and we have taken the necessary steps by issuing them with a query,” said Agu, reported the Punch.
““Four professors are involved and we have issued them with queries and when they reply, we would know the next action to take.”
With that issue out of the way, it appears all the union branches are prepared to continue the strike.
Meanwhile, the National Executive Council meeting in which the strike was slated to be called off was canceled over former ASUU president Festus Iyayi’s death. It’s still not totally clear when it will be rescheduled for, but one anonymous official said that it will be held this Friday, November 22.
