The ASUU strike is not called off yet, but after an intense 13-hour meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan and union leaders, the strike will likely be called off next week.
A source told the Punch that union leaders are planning to hold a council meeting on or before Saturday to vote on the proposal offered by Jonathan in the meeting.
And ASUU President Dr. Nasir Isa Faggae said that the union leaders were going back to their members with the president’s proposal.
“We are expecting that our members will respond appropriately to the message of Mr. President,” he said.
On whether the lecturers are going back to the classroom, he said: “That is up to our members.”
The deal appeared to quickly move forward after President Jonathan said that he would move to re-open universities regardless of whether the strike was called off or not.
The strike, called in July, has kept university students out of schools for over four months. The union is calling for an investment in education, including better benefits for teachers.
Jonathan, according to the source, offered to inject N1.1 trillion over the next five years into education, in the deal following the marathon meeting.
