Residents in Los Angeles, San Diego, other parts of Southern California, and as far away as Arizona and Texas reported seeing a bright flash or fireball in the sky.

NBC Los Angeles said that reports of sightings were in Anaheim, Brea, Coachella Valley, Chino, Fresno, Los Angeles, Malibu, Palmdale, Long Beach, Seal Beach, Ontario, Temecula, Palm Springs, Redlands, and in other places.

On Twitter, some speculated that it might be a meteor, an asteroid, possibly a comet, or possibly a satellite having technical issues.

“Looked like something burning up upon entry into atmosphere, big flareup. Meteor, maybe,” said Mary Slosson on Twitter.

“Did anyone else see that comet or asteroidor meteorite in diamond bar?!?! That [expletive] was huge!!!!” wrote another user

Said another: “Meteor over LA is possible. Right now is the peak of the Taurid Meteor shower. Fireballs always possible during showers.”

But the National Weather Service said that it was likely a meteor.

The National Weather Service said on its website: “Lots of meteor sightings this evening . These are likely associated with the South Taurids [meteor shower].”
