While some villagers believe the sinking of the earth is due to an underground river, others believe that it is caused by the coal mine complex in the village.
According to Xinhua Net reports over the past 4 days, Pingxiang, a village in Luxi County, Jiangxi Province suffered from geological subsidence. Looking at the village at a distance from a highway, there were two noticeable holes in the farming fields. Cracks were also found on the highway itself.
At present, the Shanghai-Kunming Expressway, from Yichun to Pingxiang, has been closed down due to the sinking of the highway.
One recent morning at 2:00am, Ms. Chen Xiu-ying was awakened by a large sound like firecrakers. She awoke her husband, Li Zhaolin, who thought that there were thieves. Chen ran outside and woke her neighbors. When she was returning to her house, she then discovered that the walls of the house had an one-inch crack.
Nearly 200 villagers then escaped in the middle of the night with no injuries.
