TORONTO—Emerging and established artists will put their work on display at the annual Sunnyside Beach Juried Art Show and Sale on the city’s waterfront this weekend.

The event will consist of 70 artist exhibitions featuring different art forms including paintings, sculptures, and photographs.

This show can act as a stepping stone for emerging artists as it offers them a good opportunity to get feedback from the public as well as their peers that can help them decide what direction they should move in, says Wojtek Biczysko, an exhibit organizer who is a sculptor himself.

There will be three awards given to winners selected by a jury, along with a People’s Choice Award. The judging will take place on Sunday afternoon, while the People’s Choice Award will be announced after the show.

Judging will be by Jamie Angell, owner of Angell Gallery; Clair Christie, director of Edward Day Gallery; and art consultant and collector John M. Kelly.

The show also features drop-in art workshops for children as well as a “tintype studio” where participants can experience a reinterpretation of the world’s first instant photographs.

“They create [a] really nice retro look which fits the Sunnyside Pavilion really well and it takes about 45 minutes to develop,” said Biczysko.

The drop-in art sessions give children an opportunity to work with multimedia art and clay sculpting. The sessions will run throughout Saturday and Sunday.

There will be live musical performances as well, with shows by AHI performing his trademark BLUEBLACKmusic – The deepest of all Blues; DeeJay Kirby selecting from his wide range of materials including jazz, soul, R&B, rock, and blues; flutist Kaili Maimets; and Luke Vajsar’s Hypnotic Smash instrumental trio.

The show is organized by Art Initiatives, a non-profit organization founded by artists and art enthusiasts who strive to initiate artistic dialogue between cultures through exhibits, educational workshops, and other events.

The Sunnyside Beach show and sale starts Friday, Sept. 9, at 2 p.m. and will run to Sunday, Sept. 11, at 6 p.m. The address is 1755 Lake Shore Boulevard West, south of Parkside Drive. Visit www.artinitiatives.ca/sunnyside/home.html for more information.
