The Minnesota city of Duluth endured heavy flooding overnight, putting parts of the community under several feet of water.

While some animals escaped, a number of animals at the Lake Superior Zoo, located in the city, were killed in the flooding, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

“The damage to both the public and private property is going to be extensive,” Duluth Mayor Don Ness told the Minneapolis Star Tribune, “It'll likely take us weeks, if not months, to fully understand the extent of the damage.”

There were no serious injuries or deaths reported in the floods, but an 8-year-old boy was swept five blocks into a culvert, the Duluth News Tribune reported. He suffered only minor injuries.

At least 20 roads, including Interstate 35, were closed down due to floods, Minnesota Public Radio reported. In and around the city, between 40 and 50 homes were evacuated.

Zookeepers are still trying to locate missing animals.
