Yoko Ono will hold a series of events in Iceland on Oct. 9 to celebrate what would have been John Lennon’s 70th birthday.
Ono made the announcement through her website earlier this week.
The artist, musician, and peace advocate will light the Imagine Peace Tower at 8 p.m. local time in remembrance of Lennon, her late husband, in a much-anticipated annual occasion on the island of Videy.
Following the ceremony, the Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band—a group formed with Lennon in 1969 before The Beatles dissolved—will stage a special performance.
In honor of the former Beatle’s human rights activism, Ono will also present the 2010 Lennon Ono Grant for Peace award to four recipients—filmmaker Josh Fox, Barbara Kowalcyk, author Michael Pollan, and author-activist Alice Walker—for “their courage and commitment to peace, truth, and human rights.”
The biennial award is usually presented to two recipients, but the awards were doubled to mark this special anniversary.
Lennon was shot outside of Dakota, the couple’s Manhattan apartment building, on Dec. 8, 1980 by Mark David Chapman. Lennon was 40 years old.
